Studies on Happiness

A survey conducted to more than 5.000 people, has shown that there is a strong link between self-acceptance and happiness, despite the fact that it is a habit that is not practiced too often.

For this study, ten daily habits were identified that science has shown can make people feel happier.

Below you have the 10 habits mentioned, with the average grades offered by respondents (on a scale of 1 to 10), referring to the frequency with which they are carried out in their lives:

  1. Give: Do things for others - 7.41
  2. Be related: Be united to others- 7.36
  3. Exercise: Take care of our body - 5.88
  4. Appreciate: Observe and value the world around us - 6.57
  5. Do new things: Keep learning new things - 6.26
  6. Address: have objectives that we are looking for with interest - 6.08
  7. Endurance: Find ways to recover - 6.33
  8. Emotion: Find a positive approach - 6.74
  9. ACCEPTANCE: Be comfortable with what you are - 5.56
  10. Meaning: Feel that we are part of something bigger - 6.38

In numerous studies it has been shown that one of the greatest associations between these happy habits and happiness is found in the Self -acceptance.

This category, however, obtained the lowest qualification of the study, with an average of only 5.56. As we see, at the top of the list of happy habits, the people scored the habit of "giving" higher way. In this category, one in six people answered 10 out of 10; Just over a third scored an 8 or 9; a little less than 6 or 7, and less than one in six (15%) were qualified at 5 or less.

One of the psychologists who participated in this study, Professor Karen Pine said:

"The practice of these habits can really increase our happiness. It is great to see so many people doing things regularly to help others, and when we make others happy we tend to feel good ourselves too. This survey shows that the practice of self-acceptance is something that could make the greatest difference to the happiness of many people. The exercise is also known to lift the mood so if people want a simple way, every day to the happiest rate that should enter the habit of being more physically active too."

Increase your self -acceptance

Here are three ways to increase your acceptance of yourself, as the researchers suggest:

  1. Be as kind to yourself as towards others.
  2. Look mistakes as opportunities to learn.
  3. Identify the things you do well, even if they are small.
  4. Ask a trusted friend or colleague to tell you what your strengths are or what you value more from you.
  5. Speak some time with yourself. Find out how you feel inside and try to be at peace with what you are.
